Cape Town Cycle Tour 2017

Cape Town Cycle Tour 2017

First time ever in 40 years, that the Cape Town Cycle Tour, has been cancelled

Firstly we heard that the Cape Town Cycle Tour was shortened to 78km. This while waiting for our start from 1E bunch leaving at 6:35. We quickly ascertained because of protest action between Kommetjie and Noordhoek. It was then with great dismay that at 06h38, we were informed that the decision to stop the 40th edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour had been made.

This because of a number of challenges, not least of which were wind speeds in excess of 100km/h in places. This, combined with a large fire that broke out in Hout Bay in the early hours of the morning, and the added risk of protest action en route, were all contributing factors to the decision made by the Joint Operation Centre (JOC) by the VOC Commander David Bellairs, to stop the event.

This in the interest of the safety of all the participants and the risk of injury and potential damage.

The sponsors then backed the decision to send all supplies that would of been used on the route, to support the people in Hout Bay, that were affected by the devastating fire.

Later in the afternoon another fire broke out on the opposite slopes of Hout Bay. This been driven by the raging wind and placing more property in danger. Subsequently it was controlled by helicopters and fire fighters on the ground.

Today we learnt that in place of the Cape Town Cycle Tour next weekend, all entrants can compete, at no charge in the 102km WACT ride (Week After Cape Town ride). How awesome is that!!!

So still an opportunity to get that much prized sub3 hour ride!!
